Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The Tampa Owner’s Guide
If you’re dealing with a failed Schluter driveway or paver accessory here in Tampa, we can source the correct Schluter-compatible part and install it. Most Schluter profile and drainage replacements for driveways and paver transitions run in the ballpark of $200 – $800 installed, depending on the profile length, substrate condition, and whether we’re pulling adjacent pavers or just re-seating an edge. You usually notice the problem first as a lifted aluminum edge by the garage apron, a drainage channel that’s stopped flowing, or a paver line that’s started drifting because the Schluter edge that kept it tight has worked loose.
We stock common Schluter edge profiles and drainage components on our service trucks. For rare or long-run profiles, we order from our Schluter supplier network and typically have the part at your door in a few business days. We’re an independent Tampa contractor, not affiliated with Schluter Systems, so our recommendation is always honest about whether an OEM Schluter part or a quality equivalent makes sense for your specific failure.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes a handful of products that show up around driveways and paver work in Tampa, and each has its own compatibility rules. The most common in our market are the Schluter-DECO-DE drainage channels, the Schluter-BARA-RT and BARA-RT/MT edge profiles, and the Schluter-TROBA-LEVEL underlayment if someone built a bonded paver system. Each product line has its own height options, and they are not interchangeable.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners hit: Schluter-DECO drainage channels are rated for specific grate load classes. A channel meant for a pedestrian walkway will bend under a truck tire. The Class B125 channels take occasional passenger-vehicle loads. The Class C250 takes regular driveway traffic. If your Tampa driveway channel is bowing or the grate cracked at the edge, odds are someone installed a pedestrian-class channel in a vehicle load. We check this on every call before ordering anything.
To identify your exact part, look for the code stamped on the underside of the profile or on the channel body itself. It will read something like DECO-DE 1000 B125 or BARA-RT 80. That number sequence is the only reliable way to match a replacement. Photos help, but stamped codes end the guesswork.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for Schluter profiles and channels, we almost always recommend staying with the genuine Schluter part. The aluminum alloy, powder-coat thickness, and grate interlock are specific to the brand’s system. For generic paver edge restraints that happen to sit next to a Schluter profile, a quality American-made aluminum or polymer edge from a brand like ProFlex or Dimex does the job just as well at a lower cost. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before you spend a dollar.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Grate rocks or clicks when you drive over it. This usually means the drainage channel body settled or the grate seat wore loose, often from a vehicle-load class that was too light for the traffic. The fix is typically a channel re-bed and grate replacement, not a full re-pour.
- Pavers along the driveway edge are spreading or lifting. The Schluter edge profile that should lock the paver line has pulled free from its anchoring. In Tampa’s sandy soils and heavy summer rains, a loose edge profile will let water get under the pavers and erode the setting bed within a season or two.
- Water pools at the driveway entrance instead of flowing to the drain. The Schluter drainage channel may be clogged with sand and fine sediment from our Florida storms, or the outlet pipe has disconnected. We clear and re-test first; replacing the channel is the last resort, not the first.
- Aluminum profile is visibly dented, kinked, or lifting at one end. This is a trip hazard and a tire hazard. A bent Schluter BARA profile won’t straighten reliably, and a kinked drainage channel won’t seat a new grate. Replacement is the honest fix.
- You hear a metallic rattle when a car crosses the channel. The grate friction fit or locking system has failed, usually after years of thermal cycling in Florida heat and wet-season moisture. It’s not dangerous yet, but a loose grate is the part that gets kicked into a lawnmower blade. We replace it before it becomes that.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Tampa, a Schluter driveway or paver edge replacement typically lands between $200 and $500 for a standard residential driveway run. A full drainage channel replacement with a vehicle-rated grate runs $400 – $800 installed, depending on the channel length and whether the concrete around it needs re-cutting or patching. If the underlying pavers have shifted and need re-setting, you may be into $700 – $1,500 to bring it all back to grade, which aligns with the low end of our paver patio and driveway work in this market.
Every quote includes a written price before work begins. No surprises once we open up the channel. The part cost, the removal labor, the re-bedding, and the clean-up are all line-itemed. And the job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it isn’t right within a year, we come back and make it right.
Your workmanship warranty is one year minimum. The Schluter part itself carries the manufacturer’s own warranty, which we’ll document for you in writing.
DIY or Call Us?
Some checks you can safely do yourself. Look for the stamped code on the profile or channel, take a clear photo, and see if the grate rocks. Clear surface debris with a garden hose. That helps us quote the job faster on the phone.
But here’s where DIY goes wrong: pulling a drainage channel out of a Tampa driveway means chipping out concrete, re-setting the channel on a level bed, and re-securing the outlet. If the channel isn’t sloped correctly by even a quarter-inch across an eight-foot run, the water that used to drain now ponds at your garage door every afternoon thunderstorm. The same goes for re-setting paver edges: if the edge restraint isn’t anchored below the setting bed, the whole line shifts again within a season of Florida rain.
If the part is simply a bent profile and the pavers are still tight, you can replace a short section with tin snips and construction adhesive. For anything involving the channel, the concrete, or the setting bed, call us at (850) 779-4017. Graham Stein will walk you through what you’re seeing, and we’ll give you a written price before the crew schedules anything.
FAQs

A correctly spec’d Schluter-DECO channel with the right load class for the traffic will run 15 to 25 years in Tampa’s climate, but the grate seat and the outlet connection are the two points most likely to fail first. We’ve replaced grates that looked new but had worn interlock tabs after a decade of residential vehicle crossings. Call (850) 779-4017 if your grate isn’t seating firm anymore.
Yes, in about half the cases we see in Tampa, the channel body is fine and the problem is a clogged outlet, a shifted grate, or a failed seal between the channel and the concrete. We clear, re-bed, and re-seal what’s salvaged, and we only replace the channel when the body is cracked, kinked, or undersized for the traffic. That repair-first approach is written into every quote.
Most Schluter edge profile replacements take two to four hours on site, including setting the adhesive and cleaning up. A drainage channel replacement with concrete cutting and re-pour is a one-day job for a standard driveway, longer if we’re re-setting a stretch of pavers. We’ll tell you the schedule before you sign anything.
We keep common Schluter BARA profiles and DECO grate replacements in our service van, along with the setting materials. For anything uncommon, we order directly through our Schluter supply partners in the Tampa Bay area. When you call, we’ll often have the part matched and coming before we hang up.
We write it down before we start so nobody is guessing mid-project. If your Schluter channel or paver edge is failing, call (850) 779-4017 for a free estimate.
