Ameristar Driveway & Pavers: The Tampa Owner’s Guide
We install Ameristar-compatible driveway and paver systems throughout Tampa, and most paver driveway replacements run $7,000 to $18,000 with a written price before any work starts. If you’re standing on a failing Ameristar paver driveway right now, the usual story is one of three things: edge restraints have let go along the Tampa lot lines, the sand bed has washed out after a few rainy seasons, or tree roots from an oak or palm have pushed a section out of level. The fix is rarely just one paver. It’s the base, the edge, and the drainage underneath it.
We’re an independent Tampa contractor, not affiliated with Ameristar, but we work with their paver lines and their dimensions every month. What we’ve learned in the process matters more than the brand name stamped on the unit. And the first thing Tampa homeowners deserve is a straight answer about whether this is a patch job or a rebuild. We’ll get to that.
Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

Ameristar produces concrete pavers in three families that show up most often in Tampa driveways and patios: Ameristar Classic (a 60mm thick paver, usually 4″x8″ or 6″x9″ format), Ameristar Estate (80mm thick, with larger formats built for residential vehicle traffic), and Ameristar Permeable (designed for Florida’s drainage codes, with wider joints). The compatibility gotcha we see on Tampa jobs is thickness. A 60mm Classic paver placed on a driveway that now carries an SUV or a delivery van will crack at the edges faster than an 80mm Estate paver, and that’s often the entire story.
Identify what you have before you buy anything. Flip a loose paver: the Ameristar name and series will be cast into the underside, along with the thickness in millimeters. If the stamping is worn, measure the paver’s depth with a tape. Then count your existing format, because matching an old 6″x9″ layout with a new 4″x8″ will look wrong no matter how carefully it’s installed. On replacement sections, we recommend OEM Ameristar units when the pattern and color need to match exactly. For full rebuilds, quality aftermarket equivalents from the same concrete batch mix can work, but the color drift on Florida sun-faded pavers is real, so we generally keep the original manufacturer when the existing driveway is staying partially intact.

Signs Your Ameristar Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sunken or dipping sections. The sand base under the pavers has washed out, usually from Tampa’s summer rain finding a path under the edge restraint. One low spot is a base problem, not a paver problem, and adding sand on top won’t fix it for long.
- Pavers sliding outward at the edges. The plastic or aluminum edge restraint has pulled loose from the soil. Once the edge is gone, the entire field starts creeping toward the property line, and the driveway loses its locked-in strength.
- Cracks running through multiple pavers in a line. This is a sub-base issue: a tree root, an old stump that decomposed, or a poorly compacted section of original fill. Patching individual pavers over a moving base is temporary at best.
- Weed growth between joints. The joint sand has thinned and organic material has filled the gaps. Tampa’s heat sprouts weeds fast, and thick growth is a sign the pavers are no longer interlocked tightly.
- Standing water after normal rainfall. Ameristar’s permeable line exists for exactly this reason. If water pools, the pitch or the base has shifted, and Tampa’s rainy season will keep pushing the damage deeper until the drainage is corrected.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Full Ameristar paver driveway installation in Tampa runs $7,000 to $18,000, depending on the driveway’s square footage, the base condition, and whether we’re matching an existing color and pattern. Partial section repairs typically fall between $2,500 and $5,000. What drives the top of the range is usually the base: if the original sand or gravel is failing, we pull it out and rebuild it properly, because laying new pavers on a bad base is just buying a second failure in three years.
Our written price includes the pavers, the base material, the edge restraint, the labor, and the post-installation joint sand. No change orders appear after the crew arrives. When we leave, we take a photo of the clean-up and hand you a fixed-price scope. We write it down before we start so nobody is guessing mid-project. That’s a long habit, not a marketing line. On concrete product like pavers, especially in Florida’s wet-dry cycles, the prep work matters more than the paver itself, and our price reflects doing the prep once, correctly.
DIY or Call Us?
There are honest DIY checks here. You can lift one loose paver, measure its thickness, and look for the Ameristar stamp. You can check your edge restraints for pull-away and note where water is standing after a storm. That helps you understand the scope before you call.
What goes wrong with DIY on this job is the base. Pulling pavers, dumping a bag of sand, and relaying them without addressing the edge restraint or the drainage will fail again within one Tampa rainy season. Concrete pavers are heavy, the Florida sun makes any work slow, and resetting a whole driveway by hand is a five-day job for two people who know what they’re doing. For a section repair or a full rebuild, call (850) 779-4017 and we’ll give you a free, written estimate. The worst that happens is you learn what the job actually costs from someone who has done it here.
FAQs

An Ameristar paver driveway with a properly compacted base and intact edge restraints lasts 20 to 30 years in Tampa’s climate, though the joint sand needs topping up every 3 to 5 years. The pavers themselves rarely fail; the base and edges fail first.
Individual Ameristar pavers can be reset or swapped when the surrounding base is still sound, and that’s a $2,500 to $5,000 section repair on most Tampa driveways. But if the base has washed out or the edges have let go, resetting single pavers is a short-term patch. Give us a call at (850) 779-4017 and we’ll tell you which situation you’re in after seeing the site.
Most Tampa driveway replacements take 3 to 5 working days, with the first day going to removing the old pavers and prepping the base. Rain delays are common in summer, and we schedule around the forecast rather than forcing a wet install.
We stock common Ameristar Classic and Estate units on the truck for section repairs, and order less common colors and the permeable line as needed. If you need an exact match to an older pattern, we’ll pull a sample from your driveway and match it before any order goes in.
